Origins and Meaning of Taryn
My research into the name TARYN indicates
that it has origins in many different countries and cultures.

(Not surprising, really, when you consider that NO name or word
is
truly exclusive to just one language or ethnicity).

According to the many different sources I've consulted, the name
TARYN
(regardless of the spelling) means:

  Tender/Innocent      Scots-Gaelic
  Rocky Hill       Irish-Gaelic
  Thunder      Norse-Celtic
 Of The Earth      Latin
   Tower       English
 The Reaper       Greek
  Wild Goat       Hebrew
  To Carry        Arabic
   Young        Sanskrit
   Queen       Greco-Roman
  Little Princess
       Scandinavian
   Frozen        Russian
  Far To Go
      Welsh

Wow.
Kinda confusing, huh?
(I especially love that Hebrew meaning).  ;-)

We'll probably never know for sure where the name first originated,
but the majority of places I checked gave props to the Celtic-Gaelic most often.
~ (That works for me, since my last name is Celtic-Gaelic as well)! ~

 SPELLING  &  PRONUNCIATION

I must admit, when I made the decision to change my name, I wasn't totally
prepared
for always having to spell or pronounce it for everyone.
In fact
, I figured out pretty darned quick that sometimes it's easier to answer

to "Karen" or "Tara" - especially on the phone - just to save time.

I'd only experienced a little of this when I had the name "Tari" because while most people
said it correctly,
they wrongly assumed I spelled it with the more common "e".

Still, at least I was already used to not being able to find my name readily
 available on
a keychain, an I.D. bracelet, or even stationery, LOL.

Of all the Taryns I've heard from, most of them pronounce it like I do:

TARE-IN  (like Karen, but with a " T ").

However, there are others who prefer this pronunciation:
TAR-IN  (Tar rhymes with Car).

Finally, I even found a 4-year-old girl whose mother says her name this way:
TARE-INN  (accent on the 2nd syllable, like Corrinne).

An interesting factoid:  the vast majority of the Taryns (etc) who've contacted me via this
site tend to hail from England, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.

Also - believe it or not - there are quite a few boys out there with the name as well!

And it appears the spellings are just as diverse as the origins and meanings.
Again, the majority choose to spell it just like I do: TARYN.
Still, I found many variations such as:

TARIN TAREN TARAN
TARUN TARRYN TARON
TARYNN TERIN TARRAN
TERYN TARYNE TERRYN
TEHREN TEARYN TARRYNE
TERON TARINE TAREYN
TARYNNE TARRIN TERAN
TARREN TAIRYN TARRYN
TAIREN TEREN TAYREN

There's also a Celtic God of Thunder whose name is 'TARRANIS'....
Pretty cool, huh?  ;-)

FAMOUS NAMESAKES

I discovered something else about the name TARYN while looking up
the origins and meanings:  even though it appears in many different cultures and
languages, virtually no one really famous has ever had the name.

Actor Barry Van Dyke (son of Dick Van Dyke) and singer Michael Bolton each have daughters
named 'Taryn', but those Taryns aren't well known in their own right.

The three exceptions to this are actor TARAN NOAH SMITH  (the youngest son on the
"Home Improvement" TV series);  actress TARYN MANNING  (she starred in "Crossroads" with
Britney Spears);  and - of course - actress TARYN POWER,
the daughter of legendary actor Tyrone Power.

TARYN  POWER
     TARAN  NOAH  SMITH

TARYN  MANNING

Also of interest:  three databases I consulted even claim that the name Taryn is
"a feminized version of Tyrone", though this is most likely due to accounts that Tyrone Power
allegedly wanted his youngest daughter's name to be similar to his.

Well, we TARYNS of the world may only have three famous people representing us
but there's still plenty of places to find the name being used,
and you'll probably be surprised when you see just how diverse they are!

Or maybe not.  ;-)
